Kmart Super Double Deals - 7/11

Well, after my first trip to Kmart, I decided that some of the deals were worth repeating, so I headed back again today. I opted to skip Super K because I wasn't sure I could find enough different there to justify the drive.

Free Pint of Starbucks Ice Cream

Wendi, over at the Freebie Blogger, has the scoop (hehe) on how to request a coupon for a free pint of Starbucks Ice Cream. You need to be on Facebook to participate. You can send the coupon to yourself or a friend. Promo runs through July 19th. Each sender can only send one coupon and each household can only receive one coupon.

Buehler's Deals

Friday, when we got back from vacation, we came home to a nearly empty refrigerator, so I headed out to the store to get some essentials - milk, bread, eggs, fresh fruit/vegetables.

I noticed that they had their ice cream, a real 1/2 gallon package, on sale 2 for $4. We have some birthdays coming up, so I picked some of these up to hang onto for the birthday parties. In addition, shredded cheese was on sale 3 for $5 (8oz/2c shredded cheese). I know that my stock was getting a little low, so I thought this would be a good time to stock up on some cheese.

There was one other treat from the ad that I wanted to get - Diana's Bananas. I had sampled these delectable Dark Chocolate-covered Bananas one day at the store, but always felt they were price prohibitive. With a BOGO sale this week, they were only $2.40 each for a pack of 5 baby bananas. Not 'cheap', but definitely at a splurge level.

I also planned to pick up the deal that Buehler's was offering, where if you bought a 5# bag of Domino Sugar, you would get one free 5# bag of Our Family Sugar. To me, sugar is definitely one of those items where I have no preference for the brand. I was able to get 20# of sugar (2 bags of each) for only $4.88 or $1.22 / 5# bag. I figure I will store this for baking this fall.

While there, I was looking for ground meat for next week's menu plans. I happened upon a great sale. They had some close dated 93/7 Ground Turkey that was on sale for $1.99 for 1.2# package. Normally, this is $3.79 a package. I snagged up 7 of them. I can't normally find 93% lean ground beef (or turkey) for less than $2/#, so I figured I would stock up and freeze it for future weeks.

With all of the ground meat and sugar, I was able to just reach $75 ($75.12 to be exact) that allowed me to use a $5 off of $75 coupon from the Entertainment Book. In addition, I had a few other manufacturer coupons that brought my total down to the mid-$60s. As a bonus, now I won't need to shop on Sunday, like we normally do.

Kmart Super Double Deals - 7/10

Well, I finally made it to Kmart on Friday. We had been traveling so I didn't have much chance to plan, but I think I did pretty well.

Dentek Floss Picks $2.19 - $1 - $1 = $.19
Visine $3.99 - $2 - $1.99 = $0
J&J Baby Swabs $1.59 - $.75 - $.75 = $.09
Sparkle 3pk Paper Towel & Angel Soft 4ct Toilet Paper $4.78 - $2 - $2 = $.78
Sparkle 3pk Paper Towel & Angel Soft 4ct Toilet Paper $4.78 - $2 - $2 = $.78
DelMonte Raspberry Chiller $2.99 - $1 - $1 = $.99
2 cans Pringles $3 - $1 - $1 = $1
Oreo Cakesters $3 - $1 - $1 = $1
Bumble Bee Albacore Tuna Pouch $1.99 - $1 - $.99 = $0
Ring Pop $.79 (for the shopping assistant)

Total $5.62 (plus .63 tax), for $30.88 in product. My savings was $25.26, 82%. Now, if you exclude the ring pop for my shopping assistant, it would have been $25.26 in savings still but for $30.09 worth of product, or 84%. A small price to pay for cooperation while shopping.

I am thinking that I might try to go back tomorrow and repeat the Sparkle and Angel Soft deal as well as a few others. I'm just concerned with making sure that I reach the $25 before coupon total at my Big K. Not sure that I have enough time to make it to the Super K in one of the neighboring communities.

Firecracker Chicken

Based on the name, maybe I should have posted this one last week. This is a tasty treat, that we don't have often, because, well, it's fried chicken.

Firecracker Chicken

4 pieces Chicken (you can use bone-in or boneless)
1/4 c hot pepper sauce
1/3 c flour
2 Tbsp yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp salt
cooking oil

Place chicken in a plastic bag and pour hot pepper sauce over chicken. Seal and refrigerate for 1 - 24 hours, turning occasionally. In another plastic bag, combine flour, cornmeal and salt. Add chicken, shaking to coat. In a 12" skillet heat 1/2" oil over medium heat. Add chicken to skillet. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat for 25-30 minutes, turning occasionally to brown evenly, until chicken is tender and no longer pink. Drain on paper towels.

Recipe can easily be increased for more chicken.

Garage Sales

I love garage sales. I remember helping my mom set them up and man them when I was a child. When my husband and I bought our first house, the very first summer, we had a garage sale. I think it was his first, but it was pretty fun.

We live in a neighborhood now that has an annual community garage sale. We participate every year - I take a day off of work to stay home and run the garage sale. Not only does it give us a chance to get rid of things that we don't need and are taking up space in our house, but it also allows us to make some extra cash.

In addition to having garage sales, I love to shop at garage sales. As a working mom, I don't get a chance to get to many of them that interest me, but I still get to many. If you find the right garages sales, you can get some great deals. I have bought a number of things over the years, especially for the kids.

Just a few weeks ago, I headed out to the sales and was fortunate to find a number of deals. For my son, I bought 2 pairs of uniform pants and for my daughter, 3 fancy dresses, 3 casual dresses, 2 sweaters, a swimsuit and sarong, a pair of jeans and matching shirt, a pair of white shorts, a cute little denim skirt and a princess umbrella for $15.

As my son gets older, I have found that it is harder to find clothes for him at the garage sales. Evidently, boys that are 5 and up are rough on clothes, or there just are no boys in that age group that live at the houses with garage sales I shop at. I'm guessing it likely is the first one. At our garage sale, we sold more of the boys 3T and 4T clothes than any of the others.

Having garage sales to make money from what I no longer need and shopping garage sales for what I need, works for me. For more tips and tricks, check out Works For Me Wednesday at We Are THAT Family.
